După 20 de luni de la lansarea publică a iniţiativei de realizare a hărţii vectoriale a României pentru PC şi GPS-urile Garmin la scara 1:100.000 cunoscută de toată lumea sub numele de Proiectul România Digitală, avem deosebita onoare să vă anunţăm disponibilitatea versiunii 2005 a Atlasului Digital al României, RO.A.D. 2005.

În efortul de a realiza aceasta harta ne-au ajutat toţi cei care sunt parteneri în Proiectul Romania Digitala. De altfel nu cred ca am fi avut o hartă la gradul de actualitate şi completitudine fără ajutorul acestora. În peisajul românesc al fiecăruia pentru el, o mână de entuziaşti din GIS şi din afara lui au ajutat într-un efort colaborativ fără precedent în domeniu la crearea a ceva mai bun pentru toată lumea.

Noi credem că această primă versiune va crea premisele democratizării accesului publicului larg la informaţia geospaţială de calitate în România. Ceea ce a pornit în Decembrie 2003 ca o mişcare de protest faţă de ignorarea geografică (printre multe altele!) a României de astăzi de către toţi marii producători de hărţi digitale de uz general din lume, a devenit astăzi realitate.
Oferta de hartă turistică în România este în creştere. Din păcate, majoritatea hărţilor sunt pe hârtie şi pe acele puţine hărţi pe care sunt trecute griduri şi sisteme de coordonate, navigarea se poate face de către o mână de oameni obişnuiţi să-şi măsoare unghiurile de deplasare cu busola şi distanţele cu pasul. Şi se mai zice despre hărţi un lucru: că o hartă nu-ţi foloseşte la nimic dacă nu ştii unde te afli pe ea!

Astăzi am evoluat. Avem GPS-uri care ne spun cu precizie de 3 m unde suntem pe suprafaţa Pământului. Grozav! Ştim că poziţia noastră este N45.98034 şi E26.299343. Şi ce dacă? Păi ştim unde ne aflăm! OK, este adevărat, dar fără o hartă pe fundal, fără un context, poziţionarea aceasta precisă este la fel de folositoare ca o hartă fără să ştim unde ne aflăm. Ajutorul, în caz de nevoie, ar putea să fie la 100 m distanţă şi noi am putea să o luăm în direcţia opusă!

Combinaţia de GPS + hartă digitală este însă imbatabilă, pentru că oferă şi poziţionare precisă şi harta de fundal! Dacă harta aceea poţi să o încarci în GPS, atunci ai o soluţie portabilă de navigare pe teren accidentat, departe (sau mai bine zis independent!) de convertoarele de 220V pentru notebook-ul din maşină. Pentru offroaderi şi nu numai pentru ei, este ultima soluţie în materie de navigaţie, culegere de date, orientare şi supravieţuire în sălbăticia naturii sau în jungla de asfalt.

Bucureşti – 05.10.2004 After 20 months since the public launch of the initiative of making the vectorial map of Romania for Garmin PC and GPS at a 1:100.000 scale, known by everybody as Digital Romania Project, we have the pleasure to inform you of the availability of the version 2005 of the Romanian Digital Atlas, RO.A.D. 2005.
In the effort of making this map, we were helped by the partners of Digital Romania Project. As a matter of fact, we wouldn�t have been able to have an actual and a complete map without their help. In the Romanian landscape, a handful of GIS enthusiastic people and from outside helped in an unprecedented collaborative way at the creation of something better for everybody.
We think the first version will create the premises of the democratization the access of the masses at the quality geospatial information in Romania. What started in December 2003 as a protest movement against geographical ignorance (among others) of today�s Romania by all the big suppliers of digital maps of general use in the world, has become today reality.
Offer of tourist map in Romania is in hike. Unfortunately, most of the maps are on paper and on those a few maps on which there are grids and coordination systems, navigation can be done by people, used to measure the movement angles with their compass and the distances by foot. And there is a saying about maps: a map is not useful if you do not know where you are on it!
Nowadays, we have evolved. We have GPSs that tells us with precision where we are on the surface of the Earth. Thai is great! We know that our position is N45.98034 and E26.299343. So what? Well, we know where we are! OK, it�s true, but without a map on the background, without a context, this precise positioning is as useful as having a map without knowing where we are. The help, in case we need it, could be 100 m away and we could take the opposite way!
GPS combination + digital map are unbeatable, because it offers precise positioning and background map! If the map can be charged on GPS, then one has a portable solution of navigation on a rough soil, away (or better said, independently) from the 220V converters for the notebook in the car. For the offroaders and not only for them, it is the last solution concerning navigation, data gathering, orientation and survival in nature or in the asphalt jungle.
